Sleeping Bag Buying Guide:

Whether you’re planning on going on a long expedition or you’re simply moving forward with a little campout in the backyard, a good sleeping bag can keep you warm and relatively safe in the wilderness or your home. There are millions of option in regards to getting perfect sleeping bags, but there are some key features to consider before you purchase any sleeping bag. You’ll find that the main factor in selecting a good sleeping bag is not just price, it’s whether or not it will keep you warm in the cold outdoor weather.

Sleeping Bag Types:

A good starting point in regards to good features for sleeping bags is whether or not it is goose down. A goose down sleeping bag will give you the most loft and insulating power for its weight. It is also softer, adapts to temperature changes easier and is great overall. However, the downside to this type of option is that it loses insulating prowess if wet and some people are allergic to down. There are some great synthetic fills to help you out and the better ones keep you warm regardless Consider the strength of the zipper, because you don’t want to get stranded in the middle of nowhere without being able to zip up your sleeping bag in the dark. Choose a sleeping bag that fits your sleeping style. Not everyone sleeps on their back and if your bag constricts your movements, you’ll find that it’s hard to sleep at night. Some stretch more than others, and it is important you have enough room so that you do not feel like you’re in a “Mummy’s” tomb of sorts, though there are mummy sleeping bags that are preferred for the extreme cold weather adventures.  A hood option is important too, in case you need to put a pillow inside your bag, or if you want to cover your head from the elements. This feature is usually found in more expensive bags, but it is an important thing to remember.

Sleeping Bag For Camping:

There are several expensive brands to choose from, but the starting point for a great sleeping bag is around $60. These $60 bags are highly consumer rated and offer a wealth of warmth even in the most frigid of temperatures. The best brands and models have been proven to be The North Face Tigger starting at $60, The GoLite Adrenaline at $600, Western Mountaineering Ultra Lite at $360, Coleman Hibernation Sleeping Bag at $70, and the L.L. Bean Flannel-Lined Camp Bag at around $60. There are other comparable sleeping bag brands such as Slumberjack, which are competitive in quality and price.  There are a lot of cheaper brands, models and styles out there, but it is recommended to invest a little more in your sleeping bag so that you’re not literally stuck out in the cold without an adequate sleep aid.

Sleeping Bag Warranty:

Warranties are somewhat limited in regards to these items, but it is important to get a good one in case your sleeping bag rips, the zipper fails, or you just have unforeseen problems arise with it. Most people do not opt for an extended warranty, but there are some brands that offer longer replacement warranties than others. Regardless of what your intentions are for your sleeping bag, a warm, versatile bag is important, and can keep you warm no matter what the situation is out there in the wild.
